December 22nd, 2023
Hi Friends,
Good day!
Today is winter solstice festival. In our region we call it Dongzhi. Let me introduce a little about the special food we eat in this festival.
The winter solstice festival is a celebration that takes place around the time of the winter solstice, typically between December 20th and 23rd in the Northern Hemisphere. Many cultures and traditions around the world observe this event with various rituals and festivities. In some cultures, it symbolizes the return of the sun and the promise of longer daylight hours. It’s a time for gathering, feasting, and often involves rituals and ceremonies that honor the changing of the seasons. Examples of winter solstice festivals include Yule in Pagan traditions, Dongzhi in East Asia, and other cultural celebrations with their own unique customs and significance.
In the south part of China, people eat Tangyuan on this day.
Tangyuan, also known as yuanxiao, is a traditional Chinese dessert made from glutinous rice flour. The dough is shaped into small balls and then typically filled with various sweet fillings such as sesame paste, red bean paste, or peanut paste. The filled balls are then boiled and served in a sweet soup or syrup. Tangyuan is often enjoyed during festivals and special occasions, symbolizing family unity and togetherness.
In the north part of China, people eat Dumpling on this day.
Dumplings are a broad category of dishes that consist of small pieces of dough, often filled with various types of ingredients such as meats, vegetables, or cheeses. They can be boiled, steamed, or pan-fried, and are enjoyed in many different cultures around the world, with each culture having its own variations and flavors. Some popular types of dumplings include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Eastern European varieties such as pierogi and pelmeni.
In us Huangyan, we eat the sweet tangyuan covered with soybean powder. The powder looks like yellow soil. We also jokily say “Eating Tu”(Means eating soil).
If there’s any other festival ceremony you know, welcome your leaving message to us. We appreciate your focus on us.
Thanks & have a good weekend!
